New: Model Rocket List

June 30, 2008

The next feature of our blogsite will be a list of all the designs we’ve posted through the BARCLONE website and through YORF. The designs will be in alphabetical order, and will be numbered. Our plan, over time, is to link these to their respective RockSim files for easier downloads.

Our Signature Design…

June 28, 2008

For some time now, I’ve used the Antares design

as my avatar on YORF. Originally developed in 2003, and revised in 2007, the Antares is a retro-50s SciFi and Fantasy type of design with exaggerated fins and tip pods. Both versions have flown well.

The model uses Estes-diminsioned components.

Although the RockSim file does not show this correctly, the fin tip pods use regular balsa nose cones instead of being flat extensions of the fin. This is a limitation of the RockSim program, which cannot place nose cones or transitions anywhere except on the rocket’s centerline.

Random Bits…

I’m selecting a few special designs from the past and placing them on the “Collective Insanity” page. What you find here initially will be those designs which have been built and flown, not just simulated on the computer. Our first entries are two versions of the Andromeda, a Mk VI and a Mk VIII, which are only different in their lengths. This design raised some RSO eyebrows at an Arizona meet earlier this year. Seems no one wanted to believe a rocket could fly straight and safe with so much fin area missing!

Thanks go to ManicBAR for relating the story about his build. His version omitted the internal bulkheads and allowed the shrouds to act as ringfins, while my first two prototypes kept the bulkheads and used only the open-frame fins to keep the model on the straight-and-narrow. His information is prompting me to go back and remove the bulkheads from the first model, just to see if it has any effect.

I’m also glad to hear ManicBAR got his model back after the flight…

Hello world!

June 20, 2008

This is the Official BARCLONE Rocketry blog site. Together with the master website and our popular “sticky” threads on Ye Olde Rocket Forum, the blog will be used to provide additional information about our extensive series of model rocket designs. Whenever a new design is released, an announcement and a description will be posted here.
